In Memorial of Lily Chang-Wang

Our dear friend Lily Chang-Wang lost her battle to breast cancer on October 30, 2015. An avid community volunteer and passionate humanitarian, Lily inspired many of her friends and neighbors to advocate for racial harmony and civil involvement. Her passing is not only a great loss to her family and Great Neck community, but also to all who wish for a peaceful and vigorous society.

We invite you to a memorial service where we celebrate her short yet vigorous life. Please let us know if you would like to share a piece of memory of Lily. Memory sharing is limited to 1-2 minutes for each person.

王张莉莉追念会

2015年10月30日，我们失去了一位亲爱的朋友 —— 王张莉莉因为乳癌恶化，永远离开了我们。莉莉一直义务服务大颈社区很多年，她倡导并身体力行致力于族裔融合，她的热情和信仰感染了我们社区许许多多的人。她的去世，不仅仅是她的家人和大颈社区的损失，也是我们所有和莉莉一样有着建设美好社区愿景的朋友们的损失～

GNCA关于学区通知中文翻译问题的情况汇报

各位GNCA会员和朋友们，对于大家一直非常关心的学区通知的中文翻译的问题，GNCA的代表在暑假期间与UPTC president Joanne Chen进行了深入探讨。以下将我们了解到的情况向大家汇报一下。
学校对于学区通知中文翻译不准确的问题一直都在寻求解决方案。但是由于学校学生信息系统的限制，使得解决这一问题变得很困难。大颈学区是用Infinite Campus这一系统储存每个学生的所有资料（我们登录查学生成绩用的Campus Parent Portal即是这个系统的一部分）。这个资料包括入学时填写的家庭语言，目前大颈学区的家庭使用语言，除了英文和中文外，还有韩文，西班牙文等几十种。当紧急情况发生时（比如大雪临时停课），学区的superintendent或者其他人需要发紧急通知，为了照顾完全不懂英文的家庭，会把这个通知通过Infinite Campus中的翻译系统（即是Google translator）翻译成各个国家的语言自动发到不同语言的家庭中。紧急通知一般在15分钟内发出，而且通常在是凌晨时间。
因此，由于Google translator已经嵌入了学生系统中，使我们想要使用其他翻译方式代替google翻译成为不可能，在紧急时刻去找志愿者翻译再强行将翻译输入系统中对双方都不现实。学校也知道Google translator翻译出来的东西并不完美，尤其是亚洲语言，但是为了帮助一点英语都不懂的新移民，还是会继续采用这个系统。（在几年前，学区通知只有英文版，没有其他语言的版本。）
在听取了中国家长的意见以后，UPTC和学校已经多次修改英文版本的通知，努力避免中文翻译中的误差。但是由于翻译软件的局限性，一直无法做到尽善尽美。如果大家能够看懂英文，还是建议大家选择英文版本（这点可以在parent portal中修改）。实在对通知中英文或者中文表达的意思有疑虑的，可以在微信群里和其他人即时确认一下。
以上说明主要针对的是紧急情况通知，对于其他非紧急情况的中文翻译，GNCA仍在努力和UPTC合作，希望能有更准确方便快捷的翻译。
